Your ZIP code might be the most expensive thing you own. Compare tax and cost-of-living between here and there, and see how many years a move could shave off your path to freedom.
How many years could relocating cut off my path to financial independence?
Moving attacks both sides of the equation at once: a lower tax rate raises what you keep, and a lower cost of living cuts both what you spend and the FI number you need — since FI = annual spending × 25. That double effect is why relocation moves the date far more than an equivalent raise.
- Worked example (defaults on this page): $150,000 gross at a 32% rate with $70,000 of spending saves $32,000 a year against a $1,750,000 target — 23.3 years at a 7% return.
- The same income at a 10% rate with a 70% cost-of-living index saves $86,000 against a $1,225,000 target — 10.2 years.
- That is 13.0 years saved, and almost none of it comes from earning more. The savings rate went from 21% to 57% on identical gross income.
- The tax input is the fragile one. State residency rules, exit taxes and — for those going abroad — US citizenship-based taxation mean the target rate is rarely as low as headline figures suggest.
Under the hood
The math, fully exposed
We compute savings in both locations, then how long each takes to reach financial independence (4% rule):
- Two compounding levers: a lower tax rate raises savings, and a lower cost of living both raises savings and lowers the FI number you\'re aiming at — a double effect on the timeline.
- 4% rule basis: we target 25× the location\'s annual spending. Adjust your spending and cost-of-living sliders to model the exact lifestyle you\'d keep.
- Simplified, and tax is hard: real cross-border taxation (worldwide income, exclusions, treaties) is complex. This sizes the prize; a professional confirms the number.
